People sleep (usually) at night, and dogs and cats doze pretty much whenever they can. But how about other living things, like plants? Whether or not those tulips turn in at the end of the day depends on whom you ask—and how you define sleep.

Plants don’t have a central nervous system, which is an essential regulator of sleep in humans. But they do tune themselves to a 24-hour circadian rhythm, just like you. And they do shut down certain processes, like photosynthesis, when the sun goes down, shifting their focus instead to delivering glucose (sugar) throughout the plant. Some plants, including the aptly named morning glory, also close their blooms when the sun goes down.

Sunlight is a key trigger for humans to know what time to sleep and when to be awake. And the same is true of plants. While light and dark tell your body when to produce the hormone melatonin, which cues your body to feel sleepy, light and dark triggers tell plants when to produce the hormone auxin, which controls growth and development.

Plants may not be able to get up and hunt for food (or grocery shop, or call for takeout, for that matter!), but they do move in small ways to maximize their exposure to energy-giving sunlight. During the day, they soak up the sun in order to make energy through photosynthesis, a plant’s version of eating. Then, at night, they turn their attention to metabolizing the energy that they’ve taken in and using it to grow. So maybe you should be saying “goodnight” to your garden when you turn out the lights! hope this helps

When apparent competition occurs, the:
artcher [175]

Answer:

The correct answer is:

population of the predator species is larger and the populations of the prey species are smaller. (C)

Explanation:

apparent competition occurs occurs between two species or group of organisms that do not directly compete for resources affect each other indirectly by being prey to the same predator. For example consider three species of organisms; sparrows, earthworms and beetles, where earthworms and beetles are preys of the sparrows, an increase in the population of earthworms will in the long term lead to an increase in the population of sparrows, which means that more predators will be available, leading to a decrease in the population of beetles, because more predators are available to prey on them. Also a decrease in the population of earthworms will also lead to a decrease in the population of beetles because their probability of being seen by the predators will increase leading to an increase in their killing.

Therefore in apparent competition, although it occurs between two prey species, their in an increase in the number of predators and a decrease in the population of the prey.

Which of the following is true about natural selection?
Anna007 [38]

The options for this question are:

- Requires genetic variation

- Results in descent with modification

- Involves differential reproductive success

- All of the above

Answer:

The correct option is d) All of the above

Explanation:

The theory of natural selection explains that genetic variations occur in organisms of a species. Those organisms which are better adapted to live in an environment are able to survive and pass on their characteristics to their offsprings, hence descent with modification. Through this phenomenon, evolution takes place with the passage of time. Natural selection favours survival of the fittest. Hence, all of the above statements are true.
