Building off of the last answer; stem cells are essential in possible cures for destroyed tissues/cells because they can almost mend the damaged spot, which is why stem cell research is very prominent recently. The cells don't have a set function developed yet, so they can be used for a boatload of things until they 'specialize' and they're not as useful anymore.

Embryonic stem cells are special in that they can generate all cell types in the body; they are "pluripotent".

One of these embryo stem cells represent a potentially unlimited source of cells.
