This is natural since our brains are trained to quickly associate things that are dangerous to us and remember them. It is important to always have means of defending yourself from bad guys. This includes a security system that can handle various alarms and even firearms for immediate self defense. Applying these methods Martin would feel safer and bring an end to his emotional coping.
