14+x=22
I think this will be the answer because it shows how many he already had and it is solvable.
Subtract 14 from both sides and you get eight.
X=8

Well this is how i would solve that. You know larry has 14 cars. so write that.
Larry=14 cars
Now you don't know how much his grandparents gave him so write that.
grandparents= x amount of cars
Now you know the total amount larry has. so write that.
total of cars=22
Now, this is how i would solve a question like this. i would take the numbers i have and turn it into an addition problem. so it will look like the following.
14+x=22
now it is easy to solve from here. If you subtract 14 on both sides you will see how many cars his grandparents gave.
14+x+22
-14
------------
x=8
and if u wanna check it. all u do is add 8 to 14 and see if it gives you 22. That's it!!

Find two numbers that multiply to make the 1st number and add to make the 2nd number. Multiply -42; Add 1 _____, and _____
dedylja [7]

Answer:

 -6 and 7

Step-by-step explanation:

It is useful to look at the factor pairs of -42.

 -42 = -1(42) = -2(21) = -3(14) = -6(7)

Sums of these factor pairs are 41, 19, 11, 1.

You want the last pair of factors: -6 and 7.

A college charters a bus for $1300 to take a group of students to see a Broadway production. When 14 more students join the trip
tiny-mole [99]
let x = the original no. of students
then
(x+10) = the actual no. that went on the trip
:
= the original cost per student
and
= the actual cost
:
Original cost - actual cost = $12.50
- = 12.50
multiply equation by x(x+10)
x(x+10)* - x(x+10)* = 12.50x(x+10)
Cancel the denominators

1500(x+10) - 1500x = 12.5x(x+10)
1500x + 15000 - 1500x = 12.5x^2 + 125x
Combine on the right to form a quadratic equation
0 = 12.5x^2 + 125x - 15000
Simplify, divide equation by 12.5
x^2 + 10x - 1200 = 0
You can use the quadratic formula; a=1; b=10; c=-1200, but this will factor to
(x + 40(x - 30) = 0
The positive solution is what we want here
x = 30 students in the original group
Check this by finding the cost per student for each scenario
1500/30 = $50.00; original cost
1500/40 = $37.50; actual cost
---------------------
saving: $12.50
