ATP is also known as adenosine triphosphate. Adenosine is a nitrogenous base adenine which is attached to the 5 carbon ribose sugar and 3 phosphate groups.The three phosphate groups the alpha,beta and gamma are attached with the help of chemical bonds known as phosphoanhydride Bond.

When the bond between Beta and Gamma which is the last phosphate is broken it releases high-calorie energy of 7300 calories. This is the energy used by the cell to perform many activities that require external energy.

After the bond is broken, ATP converts into ADP as 1 phosphate is released due to breaking of bonds between Beta and Gamma phosphate.
