President Richard Nixon would engage in a foreign policy that focused on retaliating against the influences of Communism, which at the time was a strong ideological current throughout the world. This policy would be known as the "Nixon Doctrine".

An example of the execution of this doctrine was "Vietnamization" or the indirect assistance of Southern Vietnamize troops against Northern Vietnam during the Vietnam War during the second half of the 1970s.
