His bone leg steadied in that hole; one arm elevated, and holding by a shroud; Captain Ahab stood erect, looking straight out be

yond the ship’s ever pitching prow. There was an infinity of firmest fortitude, a determinate, unsurrenderable willfulness, in the fixed and fearless, forward dedication of that glance.Which best describes the theme Melville develops in this excerpt from the chapter?

Answer:

Obsession

Explanation:

This is because the writer wants the reader to learn that Captain Ahab's fight with the whale, was beyond anyone's understanding, the captain was determined to either capture or end the whale's life, even if he had to give his own, because that whale had make him suffer for a long time and it had been tormenting many other ships.

What does calcareous ooze become when it dries out? What does siliceous ooze become when it dries out?
zaharov [31]

siliceous

Deep seafloor deposition in the form of ooze is the largest long-term sink of the oceanic silica cycle (6.3 ± 3.6 Tmol Si year−1). As noted above, this ooze is diagenetically transformed into lithospheric marine chert.

calcareous

Calcareous ooze is a calcium carbonate mud formed from the hard parts (tests) of the bodies of free-floating organisms. Once this mud has been deposited, it can be converted into stone by processes of compaction, cementation, and recrystallization. ... Foraminifera are also single-celled organisms.

Why did the French want to take over the Natchez tribes land
Ber [7]

Answer: They wanted to use their land for tobacco plantations.

The Natchez are a Native American people from the Lower Mississippi Valley. They spoke a language with no known close relatives, and are noted for being the only Mississippian culture with complex chiefdoms that survived into the colonization period. The Natchez were defeated by French forces around 1730. Today, most descendants of the Natchez live in Oklahoma and South Carolina.

Initially, contact between the Natchez and the Europeans was peaceful. French colonists intermarried with the Native Americans and the French were granted some lands to cultivate. French colonists imported African slaves and cultivated tobacco plants. During the 1710s and 1720s, however, several conflicts arose. These culminated in the French commander Sieur de Chepart's order to vacate the village in order to use the land for a tobacco plantation. This initiated the Natchez Revolt.
