Sleep involves five distinct stages that are natural to us humans, as we need this daily to function properly. Stage one is Theta and Alpha. Being a person who meditates, I often find myself in Alpha stages where there is heightened senses, and a state of being one with the universe. Later in this stage, we reach a state (Theta) where we are on the verge of being asleep. In stage two, our body's heart slows, and body temperature drops. We have rapid brain activity known as Sleep Spindles, which I would call this stage the Spindle stage. In stage three, we transition from just beginning sleep to being in a very deep sleep. In stage four, we typically stay in this deep sleep for 30 minutes. And finally in stage five, we enter REM sleep, where we our brain activity is extremely active, but our body muscles slowly paralyze, so we prevent ourselves from hurting our selves. This is also prime time for dreams to occur.
