55 is 40% of what number
SCORPION-xisa [38]
You simply put 40 over a hundred and 55 over n (which is the number were trying to find)  so you do cross multiplication. 55 times a hundred and after you get the answer. You divide it by 40 and should get 137.5.

Can someone help me do 8 divided by 5.5?? Thanks!!
Viktor [21]
First you put 8 on the inside of a house and 5.5 on the outside. Then you take the 5.5 and see how many times it can go in 8 with out going over, in this case its once. So take 5.5 and subtract it under the 8. Since you used up the whole number, you have to put a decimal now, so put a decimal on the right side of the 1 on top of the house. Then, add a 0 next to the 8 and put it next to the answer of 8-5.5, which is 2.5, and now 25, the zero moving the number to the left once. Now you find out how many times 5.5 goes into 25, which is 4, adding that next to the decimal on top of the house. Now again, subtract 22, which is 4 x 5.5, from 25. Then add a zero, making 3, now 30.Now find how many times 5.5 goes into that, and it is 5. This 4 and 5 pattern will go on forever, so over the 45 in your answer 1.45, put a line. Like this      __

A race is 3 miles long. There are water stations every 3/4 mile along the route. How many water stations are along the route?
Vilka [71]
There will be 4 water stations.

Why?

3/4 = .75 as a decimal

Personally, I believe that it’s easier to use decimals, I can explain the way in fractions in the comments if you’d like, just ask.

Anyway, .75 • 4= 3

or 3 / .75 = 4 (division is easier with bigger numbers)

so, there will be 4 water stations, given that the one race is 3 miles long.

If this explanation seems unclear, I’d be happy to explain. Feel free to ask in the comments!! I’m happy to help.

Hope this helps!

A limited-edition poster increases in value each year. After 1 year, the poster is worth $20.70. After 2 years, it is worth $23.
kumpel [21]
Assuming that this is a linear relationship you must find the rate of change...$23.81-$20.70= $3.11. 3.11 is how much it changed that year. What that also gives you is how much you bought the post for at 0 years by subtracting $20.70 and the $3.11 = the price of the poster. This gives us the equation y=3.11(x)+17.59
Where Y is the value and X is the amount of years.
