The Mayans settled in the Pe'ten, their word for "flat region" in present-day Guatemala. These lands had dense forests that blocked out the sun, so people thought they were the worst regions to settle. But the Mayans saw its potential, since swamps and sinkholes in the pe'ten gave them access to underground rivers, streams and a year-round source of water. However, building cities in this kind of territory was really difficult.
