B. He sailed under the English flag and landed in Canada, giving England a claim to much of North America.

Giovanni Caboto (Born in 1450, died approximately in 1499) was an Italian explorer and navigator, best known for his voyages to North America under the English flag, and his landing in part of Canada, which later England ruler's claimed.

On March 5, 1496, King Henry VII of England authorized Giovanni Cabot to voyage in search of unknown lands to give to England. And on May 1497 Cabot, along with his 18 crew-men, traveled by sea from Bristol, England. His intention was to get to Asia, but instead, he landed on the east coast of North America, what now is part of Canada.
