Writing rules for sequences often requires a bit of creative thinking. Sometimes it helps to look a the differences between terms. After you have computed differences, you can compare them to constants, or terms in the sequence, or check to see if they have some sequence of their own. Sometimes the sequence is constructed so it has a pattern that is replicated over and over.

12. Differences are 5, 3, 8, 11. We see that the last of these correspond exactly to terms in the sequence. In fact, it appears that each term in the sequence is the sum of the previous two. Then the recursion relation is

... a[1] = 3

... a[2] = 8

... a[n] = a[n-1] + a[n-2]

_____

13. It appears that each term of the sequence is the opposite of the term 3 before it.

... a[1] = 1

... a[2] = 2

... a[3] = 1

... a[n] = -a[n-3]

From a hot air balloon that is between his house and parade, john measures the angle of depression to his house of 35 and to the
igomit [66]

4500 feet

Step-by-step explanation:

We can begin by finding x using the tangent rule;

The tangent of the angle = the length of the opposite side / the length of the adjacent side

Tan 35 = 3500 / x

X = 3500 / tan 35

X  = 3500 / 0.7

X = 5000

Now that we have x we can calculate the value of ? using the same tangent rule;

Tan 42 = ? / 5000

? =  tan42 * 5000

? = 0.9 * 5000

? = 4500

Consider the function below, which has a relative minimum located at (-3 , -18) and a relative maximum located at (1/3, 14/17).
leonid [27]
First of all, when I do all the math on this, I get the coordinates for the max point to be (1/3, 14/27).  But anyway, we need to find the derivative to see where those values fall in a table of intervals where the function is increasing or decreasing.  The first derivative of the function is f'(x)=-3x^2-8x+3.  Set the derivative equal to 0 and factor to find the critical numbers. 0=-3x^2-8x+3, so x = -3 and x = 1/3.  We set up a table of intervals using those critical numbers, test a value within each interval, and the resulting sign, positive or negative, tells us where the function is increasing or decreasing.  From there we will look at our points to determine which fall into the "decreasing" category.  Our intervals will be -∞<x<-3, -3<x<1/3, 1/3<x<∞.  In the first interval test -4. f'(-4)=-13; therefore, the function is decreasing on this interval.  In the second interval test 0. f'(0)=3; therefore, the function is increasing on this interval.  In the third interval test 1. f'(1)=-8; therefore, the function is decreasing on this interval.  In order to determine where our points in question fall, look to the x value.  The ones that fall into the "decreasing" category are (2, -18), (1, -2), and (-4, -12).  The point (-3, -18) is already a min value.

Someone help with this
elena-14-01-66 [18.8K]

The quadrants are I, II, III, and IV, (meaning 1, 2, 3, and 4). The first quadrant is in the upper right, which has both positive x and positive y values. The second quadrant is the upper left, which has negative x and positive y values. The third quadrant is the lower left, which has both negative x and y values. The fourth quadrant is the lower right, which has positive x and negative y values. Using this knowledge and our positive and negative signs, the following are the answers to questions 1-6.

1) (-4, -2) - Quadrant III, both x and y are negative

2) (0, -7) - This point is actually on the y-axis. The x value is 0 and the y value is -7, so the graph is 7 units down from the origin on the y-axis.

3) (0,0) - This point is the origin, or where the x and y axes cross (the middle of the graph).

4) (6, -9) - This point is in Quadrant IV, because it has a positive x value and a negative y value

5) (3,5) - This point is in Quadrant I, because both the x and y values are positive.

6) (8,0) - This point is on the x-axis. The y-value is zero, so this point is 8 units to the right of the origin between Quadrant I and Quadrant IV.

Using the knowledge presented above, to graph the points given to you in the second part of the problem, first you can figure out what quadrant or part of the graph the point is on. Then, you can count the number of units (squares on the graph) in the right direction (remember that up is positive on the y-axis and down is negative, and to the right is positive on the x-axis and to the left is negative) in order to plot the points. Then, you must connect the points that correspond to the same figure in order to create the figures.

Hope this helps!
