Water is one of the agents that causes physical weathering.

  • during periods of low temperature especially the summer, water usually collects within rock cavities.
  • When temperature drops, the water freezes and expands.
  • Periodic freezing and thawing of ice leads to physical weathering.
  • Also, in tropical regions, alternate wetting and drying of rocks occur.
  • When a rock is wet, it absorbs more water and it volume expands.
  • Drying occurs and it loses the water.
  • This continuous process leaves cracks in rock.
