First let us calculate for the rate constant k from the formula:

k = ln(2) / t0.5

where t0.5 is the half life

k = ln(2) / 1.3x10^9 years

k = 5.33x10^-10 years-1

Then we use the formula:

A/Ao = e^-kt

where A/Ao is the amount remaining = 25% = 0.25, t is time

Rearranging to get t:

t = ln(A/Ao) / -k

t = ln(0.25) / (-5.33x10^-10 years-1)

t = 2.6x10^9 years

Answer : The age of the sample of granite is, 2.6 billion years

Solution : Given,

As we know that the radioactive decays follow the first order kinetics.

First we have to calculate the rate constant.

Formula used : t_{1/2}=\frac{0.693}{k}

1.3\text{ billion years}=\frac{0.693}{k}

k=0.533(\text{billion years})^{-1}

Now we have to calculate the age of the sample of granite.

The expression for rate law for first order kinetics is given by :

k=\frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{a}{a-x}

where,

k = rate constant  = 0.533

t = time taken for decay process  = ?

a = initial amount of the reactant  = 100 g

a - x = amount left after decay process  = 100 - 75 = 25 g

Putting values in above equation, we get the age of the sample of granite.

0.533=\frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{100}{25}

t=2.6\text{ billion years}

Therefore, the age of the sample of granite is, 2.6 billion years

How might a molecule with two strong bond dipoles have no molecular dipole at all?
Reil [10]
 A molecule with two strong bond dipoles can have no molecular dipole if the bond dipoles cancel each other out by pointing in exactly opposite directions. For example, in carbon dioxide (a linear molecule), the carbon-oxygen bonds have a <span>large dipole moment. However, because one dipole points to the left and the other to the right the dipole is cancelled.</span>

Phenolphthalein has a pKa of 9.7 and is colorless in its acid form and pink in its basic form. calculate [In-}/{HIn} for the fol
zvonat [6]

Answer:

1.58x10⁻⁵

2.51x10⁻⁸

0.0126

63.10

Explanation:

Phenolphthalein acts like a weak acid, so in aqueous solution, it has an acid form HIn, and the conjugate base In-, and the pH of it can be calculated by the Handerson-Halsebach equation:

pH = pKa + log[In-]/[HIn]

pKa = -logKa, and Ka is the equilibrium constant of the dissociation of the acid. [X] is the concentrantion of X. Thus,

i) pH = 4.9

4.9 = 9.7 + log[In-]/[HIn]

log[In-]/[HIn] = - 4.8

[In-]/[HIn] = 10^{-4.8}

[In-]/[HIn] = 1.58x10⁻⁵

ii) pH = 2.1

2.1 = 9.7 + log[In-]/[HIn]

log[In-]/[HIn] = -7.6

[In-]/[HIn] = 10^{-7.6}

[In-]/[HIn] = 2.51x10⁻⁸

iii) pH = 7.8

7.8 = 9.7 + log[In-]/[HIn]

log[In-]/[HIn] = -1.9

[In-]/[HIn] = 10^{-1.9}

[In-]/[HIn] = 0.0126

iv) pH = 11.5

11.5 = 9.7 + log[In-]/[HIn]

log[In-]/[HIn] = 1.8

[In-]/[HIn] = 10^{1.8}

[In-]/[HIn] = 63.10
