Washing soda is a hydrated compound whose formula can be written na2co3 i zh2o, where z is the number of moles of h2o per mole o

f na2co3. when a 2.123 g sample of washing soda was heated at 130°c, all of the water of hydration was lost, leaving 0.787 g of anhydrous sodium carbonate. calculate the value of z.

Answer:

The value of z is 10,Na_2CO_3.10H_2O.

Explanation:

Mass of washing soda = 2.123 g

Mass of sodium carbonate = 0.787 g

Mass of water = 2.123 g-0.787 g =1.336 g

Wasing soda → Sodium carbonate + water

Na_2CO_3.zH_2O\rightarrow Na_2CO_3+zH_2O

Moles of sodium carbonate =

\frac{0.787 g}{106 g/mol}=0.007424 mol

Moles of water = \frac{1.336 g}{18 g/mol}=0.07422 mol

According to reaction , 1 mol of sodium carbonate obtained with z moles of water.

\frac{1}{z}=\frac{0.007424 mol}{0.07422 mol}

z = 9.99 ≈ 10

If the volume of a container of air is reduced by one-half what happens to the partial pressure of oxygen within the container?
katovenus [111]

Decreasing Pressure. The combined gas law states that the pressure of a gas is inversely related to the volume and directly related to the temperature. If temperature is held constant, the equation is reduced to Boyle's law. Therefore, if you decrease the pressure of a fixed amount of gas, its volume will increase.

The removal of one or more electrons from a neutral atom results in and
Studentka2010 [4]

Answer:

The removal of one or more electrons from a neutral atom results in a cation.

Explanation:

When you remove electrons from a neutral atom, the atom becomes more positive. Electrons have a negative charge and the protons inside of the nucleus have a positive charge. When electrons are removed, the positive charges from the protons outweigh the negative charges. This results in a positively charged atom, called a cation.

Which of the following describes carbon dioxide? O Has polar covalent bonds and is a polar molecule O Has non-polar covalent bon
OLga [1]

Answer: Option "Has polar bonds and is a non-polar molecule" is the correct answer.

Explanation:

A covalent compound is defined as the compound in which there will be sharing of electrons between the combining atoms.

An ionic compound is defined as the compound in which there will be transfer of electrons from one atom to another.

 • A non-polar covalent compound is defined as the compound in which there will be equal sharing of electrons between the combining atoms.

For example, a chlorine atom has 7 valence electrons.

So, when a chlorine atom chemically combines with another chlorine atom then there occurs equal sharing of electrons.

Hence, molecule Cl_{2} is formed which is non-polar covalent compound in nature with non-polar covalent bond.

 • A polar covalent bond is defined as the bond in which there will be unequal sharing of electrons between the combining atoms.

For example, a carbon atom has 4 valence electrons and an oxygen atom has 6 valence electrons.

To complete their octet a carbon atom needs 4 more electrons and an oxygen atom needs 2 more electrons.

And, when one carbon and two oxygen atoms chemically combine together then there occurs unequal sharing of electrons.

Hence, a polar covalent compound CO_{2} is formed.

Since, oxygen is more electronegative than carbon atom. Hence, dipoles in the linear carbon dioxide molecules will cancel out each other.

Therefore, a carbon dioxide molecule is non-polar compound that has polar covalent bonds.

Thus, we can conclude that the statement, has polar bonds and is a non-polar molecule, correctly describes carbon dioxide.
