A wildlife service wanted to estimate the number of alligators in a river so they tagged 90 alligators and released them back in
to the river. Later they found that a sample of 200 alligators contained 23 that were tagged. Assuming that the tagged alligators are evenly distributed, what is the best estimate of the number of alligators in the river? This is from a practice test I found online for a placement test for a community college. I have never encountered these type of word problems before. I don't even know where to start.
You can solve this with a proportion. If you know that 23 tagged alligators were in a 200 alligator sample, there are 90 tagged alligators in the entire river. Written otherwise:
23/200 = 90/x
and solve for x:
x = 782.608...
So the "best estimate" would be around 783 alligators. Hope that helps! If you liked this answer please rate it as brainliest!! thank you!!!
Ok so if you did 156-6 (considering it was 6 more you want to subtract it) and then because the girls was doubled the boys (you are now at 150) you must divide that by 3 which will give you 50. But you need to double it (for girls) which is 100 and then you have 50 left over which is for the boys. Boys=50 girls=106
