In the ratification debate, the Anti-Federalists opposed to the Constitution. They complained that the new system threatened liberties, and failed to protect individual rights. The Anti-Federalists weren't exactly a united group, but instead involved many elements.

So he’s a pretty cool guy and was ahead of his time (wanting equal rights for all wasn’t so popular in the 18th century )
It was a very misogynistic time and the ideal woman would be one who’s submissive to her husband. But this was happening around the French Revolution and women were demanding to take part and to be heard in a way. They attempted riots and started attending political clubs.
Marquis wrote a newspaper article in support of political rights for women. (And people were pretty much shocked ) he wrote that frances women should get just as much political rights as men. Pretty shortly after that a small group of women started a small women’s rights club. Hope that helped somewhat :)
