The main character is Katya. She is a thirteen-year old who hates middle school and is determined to stay at home and be home schooled.
Milo is another teenager who is home-schooled. Katya meets him and together with Katya's friend, Francesca, start out the Homeschool Liberation League.
Some of the minor characters are Katya's parents and Eddie, a guy who helps them create the group.
