How does physical processes cause a natural event?

Using tectonics as a case study, it is very easy to correlate physical processes and natural events. Plate tectonics is the movement of large slabs of earth called the lithosphere. In geology, it is believed that the earth is broken down into plates which lies on a molten matter called the asthenosphere. The movement of these plates is responsible for the quite a number of natural events on earth today.

Plate tectonics causes volcanic activities, earthquakes, e.t.c. Plates have different motion patterns. In some places, they converge and they are known as destructive margins. In such a margin, two plates comes together. They either collide or one is submerged under another based on density difference. Where one plate goes under another, it is said to have subducted. A subducting plate gets heated and melts. The melt produces magma that forces its way through the crust and cause volcanic activities on the crust.

How plate tectonics cause volcanic eruptions.

Volcanic eruptions are produced when magma in form of lava reaches the earth surface either forcefully or gently through a vent. These volcanoes derive their magma from melt produce parts of the crust or mantle that has been forced upward through fractures.

When these lava reaches the surface, they ejected materials into the atmosphere. Some of the materials can be dusts, ash, gases e.t.c. The Hawaiian chain of Island results from intense from a hotspot forming volcanoes on the crust.

Goshia [24]

Answer: Physical/Mechanical Weathering

Explanation:

Weathering is the process that breaks down rocks into smaller particles like sediment and soil. Water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents of weathering. In this case, extreme heat during the day may have caused the rock to expand, only to shrink from the cold of the night. Over time, this weakened the structure of the rock, causing it to split and crumble, with outer layers flaking off in the process known as exfoliation.
