The results of the Bush-Gore election were controversial because of a very close vote in Florida. Bush had a narrow margin of 537 votes in the Sunshine State, which made a recount mandatory. Although Cleveland received 90,596 more votes than Harrison, Cleveland lost with only 168 votes in the electoral college. Harrison won 233 in the electoral college.
