I believe the correct answer would be metabolism. This comprises all of the reactions inside organisms that allows them to sustain life. There are two categories of such namely, anabolism and catabolism. Hope this answers the question.
Food - increase in height
Predators - fast reproduction, fast in general
Heat/lack of water - Cam photosynthesis, storage of water
Predator/prey arms war - sensors along side to detect prey, sense of smell, etc
No i don't think so i have not heard any one say that there is life anywhere else
