What did the Line of Demarcation do?

History

Answer:

A.

It split the world into two and stated that anything east of the line could be claimed by Portugal and that anything west of the line could be claimed by Spain.

Explanation:

The Line of Demarcation was an artificially set line that was dividing the zones of influence and zones where Portugal and Spain can take actions. Basically, everything that was east of the line was available to Portugal for exploitation, while everything west of the line was available to Spain for exploitation. This was referring to the New World. The Line of Demarcation was made and set by the Pope himself. The Pope got involved because he was afraid about the power of the Catholic Church and the harm that could be done to it if the two countries that were Catholic and its close allies went into war with each other. The goal of the Pope was achieved, and conflict between Portugal and Spain was avoided, which also resulted in the spread of Catholicism in the New World, thus the Catholic Church gained new zones of influence as well.

Answer:

\boxed {\boxed {\sf B. \ Slave \ owners \ did \ not \ pay \ slaves \ for \ their \ work}}

Explanation:

Let's analyze each answer choice. Remember, we are looking for what life under slavery was like.

A. Slave owners discouraged slaves from adopting elements of white culture

 • This is not true. Slaves were encouraged to assimilate and abandon their own African cultures.

B. Slave owners did not pay slaves for their work

 • This is true. Slaves were treated horribly, forced to do strenuous tasks for many hours, and never compensated for their hard work.

Even though we just found the likely answer, let's check the last two.

C. Enslaved African Americans had equal rights to those of white people.

 • This is absolutely false. Slaves were considered to be inferior and they had no rights, like voting or owning property.

D. Slaves had a great deal of freedom other than choosing where to work.

 • This is also false. Slaves had no autonomy and every aspect of their life was controlled by the slave owner.

The correct answer is B. Slave owners did not pay slaves for their work

The Sumerians believed that their gods were the cause of the sometimes frightening, unpredictable workings of nature.

Explanation:

Religious beliefs played a large role in Sumerian's daily lives. There were temples in Sumer and Sumerians believed that the rivers flooding every year were the work of the gods. There were over 3000 gods that Sumerians believed in. Of course there would be many powerful nature gods. Back in the old Sumer days, scientific reasoning was not a thing. People believed that gods caused natural disasters because they were angry.
