This was referring to the New World. The Line of Demarcation was made and set by the Pope himself. The Pope got involved because he was afraid about the power of the Catholic Church and the harm that could be done to it if the two countries that were Catholic and its close allies went into war with each other. The goal of the Pope was achieved, and conflict between Portugal and Spain was avoided, which also resulted in the spread of Catholicism in the New World, thus the Catholic Church gained new zones of influence as well.
