The electronic medical record (EMR) is a computerized record that contains documents and images in electronic form. It enables community-based physicians and other primary health care providers to electronically store, retrieve and manipulate information gathered during patient consultations. Adoption of the CRS based on pan-Canadian standards allows primary health care professionals.

** Improve automation: save time, better organize data, exchange information with other service points elsewhere in the country and avoid tedious encodings.

** Translate eHealth investments into positive health outcomes.

EMR system have been highlighted in several reports released by the Institute of Medicine. Convenient, rapid access to organized, legible patient data links from displayed information to pertinent literature, automated generation of alerts, reminders, and suggestions when standards of care are not being met. Analysis of population databases for clinical research, epidemiological assessments, quality measures, and outcomes lower cost, better service to providers and patients. Although good examples of EMR exist, the industry in general has not yet implemented systems that can routinely provide all of the desired functionality.
