Masking occurs when an individual masks or cover up their true personality or identity in order to conform to harassment, abuse or societal pressures. It an individual's way of hiding or repressing their emotion ( jealousy, fear or anger) in other to be accepted by others. They disguise certain emotions that could termed socially unacceptable.
Environmental factors like rejection, physical abuse, emotional abuse or sexual abuse can greatly impact or influence masking. Sometimes an individual masks without even knowing.
