Full Question

Let X be from a geometric distribution with probability of success p.

Given that P ( X > a + b | X > a ) = q ^ { b } = P ( X > b ) for any positive integer x.

Show that for positive integers a and b, P(X > a + b | X > a) = P(X > b).

Answer:

P(X > a + b | X > a) = P(X > b)

Proved --- See Explanation

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

P ( X > a + b | X > a ) = q ^ { b } = P ( X > b )

From the above.

We can derive the following

P(X > a), P(X > b) and P(X > a + b)

P(X > a) = q^a

P(X > b) = q^b

P(X > a + b) = q^(a + b)

Using the definition of conditional probability

P(X > a + b | X > a) can be represented by P(X > a + b and X > a)/ P(X>a)

X>a+b and X>a is equivalent to X>a+b since a+b is larger than a

So,

P(X > a + b and X > a)/ P(X>a) can be rewritten as

P(X>a + b)/P(X > a)

Bringing both sides together, we're left with

P(X > a + b | X > a) = P(X>a + b)/P(X > a)

By substituton

P(X > a + b | X > a) = q^(a+b)/q^a

P(X > a + b | X > a) = q^(a + b - a)

P(X > a + b | X > a) = q^(a - a + b)

P(X > a + b | X > a) = q^b

Since P(X > b) = q^b

So,

P(X > a + b | X > a) = P(X > b)

Is the ans i got correct?<br>the total surface area is 33.8cm² <br>
ElenaW [278]

Given:

A prism with height 5 cm and equilateral triangular base with side 2 cm.

To find:

The total surface area of the prism.

Solution:

Area of an equilateral triangle is:

A_1=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{4}a^2

Where, a is the side length.

Putting a=2, we get

A_1=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{4}(2)^2

A_1=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{4}(4)

A_1=\sqrt{3}

A_1\approx \sqrt{3}

The base and top of the prism are congruent so their area must be equal.

The lateral surface area of the prism is:

LA=Ph

Where, P is the perimeter of the base and h is the height of the prism.

The lateral surface area of the prism is:

A_2=(2+2+2)5

A_2=(6)5

A_2=30

Now, the total surface area is the sum of areas of bases and lateral surface area.

A=2A_1+A_2

A=2(1.73)+30

A=3.46+30

A=33.46

Therefore, the total surface area is 33.46 cm².

-3(8n - 5) - 2n = 8n - 21
BigorU [14]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

First you do the parentheses so the -3 x 8n= -24 and -3 x -5= 15

so it will look like this. -24n+15-2n=8n-21

Now combine like terms the -24n-2n.

-26n+15=8n-21 now subtract 8n now it will look like this

-34n+15=-21 now -15 from -21

-34n=-36

now if you want n by its self divide -34 and -36
