How can you determine which variable is dependent and which variable is independent

Answer:  The dependent variable depends on another variable for its value. For example, if  y = 2x,  setting x = 1 forces y= 2.; setting x = 10, forces y =20.  There are no other possibilities for y once x ids chosen. So y is the dependent variable and x is the independent one. You can pick values for the independent variable (x) but no so for the dependent one.

This is actually quite a deep-going question. To truly determine which variables (in an experiment, or in an observation of nature) depend of other variables is sometime very difficult and laborious. In math this may be easier. See detail below.

In pure mathematics, where variables do not necessarily carry a physical meaning, the determination is a matter of definition. A variable is defined to be dependent on another variable, for instance, y depends on x via the specific function, y = 10x + 10. The key is: this is given. Otherwise (if it were not given), suppose I gave you an equation a+b=10 and not told you which is the dependent and which the independent variable. You could think of each being either: a=10-b and b=10-a. Without this being defined, there is no clear way to determine dependency.

In science, on the other hand, the determination is made based on experimental design and based on certain plausible assumptions about natural dependencies. For example, if you design an experiment to measure some physical quantity, such a height of an individual, you can look at the that as a variable dependent on other variables, such as age, ie., what is the average height of a person given their particular age (say, 0, 1, 2,..., 18 years of age). It would be more of a stretch to measure the age as dependent variable of height.

I hope these thoughts are helpful.

a) As the constants are equal, the situation represents a proportional relationship.

b) The constant of 2/3 cupcakes per minute means that in a minute, 2/3 of a cupcake is made.

<h3>What is a proportional relationship?</h3>

A proportional relationship is a function in which the output variable is given by the input variable multiplied by a constant of proportionality, that is:

y = kx

In which k is the constant of proportionality.

In this problem, the constants for each situation are:

k = 30/45 = (30/15)/(45/15) = 2/3 = 20/30.

Since the constants are equal, the situation represents a proportional relationship.

The constant of 2/3 cupcakes per minute means that in a minute, 2/3 of a cupcake is made.

The equation x^2+ (k - 3)x + (3 - 2k) = 0, where k is a constant, has two distinct real roots.
Lisa [10]

Step-by-step explanation:

For quadratic equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0 to have two distinct real roots,

b^2 - 4ac must be positive.

b^2 - 4ac > 0

(k - 3)^2 - 4(3 - 2k) > 0

k^2 - 6k + 9 - 12 + 8k > 0

k^2 + 2k - 3 > 0

grandymaker [24]

Answer:

The direct consequences of poverty are well-known — limited access to food, water, health care or education are a few examples. However, the consequences of poor living conditions on the community are seldom discussed; indeed, if members of a community suffer from poor living conditions, then the entire community suffers.

A cheetah run 70 miles per hour what is the speed for feet per hour
pochemuha

Answer:

The correct answer to this question is that the cheetah can run 369,000 feet per hour. We can work this out in the following way:

One mile equals 1760 yards

In feet that is 3 x 1760 or 5,280

So Feet per hour will be 5280 x 70 or

369,600 feet per hour.

At a rate of 36 miles per hour, it takes Henry 15 minutes to drive from the library to his house. Show how to find the distance
EastWind [94]
This is applying the formula
distance=rate*time

We have a slight problem, though, because we are measuring rate in miles per hour, and we are measuring time in minutes. To make this problem solvable, we need to convert to either miles per minute or convert the time to hours. I'm going to convert the 15 minutes into hours:
15min*\frac{1 hour}{60 min}=\frac{1}{4}hour

Now that all of the units match, we have:
distance=36\frac{mi}{hr}*\frac{1}{4}hr

You can finish from there I'm sure.
