How can you determine which variable is dependent and which variable is independent

Answer: The dependent variable depends on another variable for its value. For example, if y = 2x, setting x = 1 forces y= 2.; setting x = 10, forces y =20. There are no other possibilities for y once x ids chosen. So y is the dependent variable and x is the independent one. You can pick values for the independent variable (x) but no so for the dependent one.

This is actually quite a deep-going question. To truly determine which variables (in an experiment, or in an observation of nature) depend of other variables is sometime very difficult and laborious. In math this may be easier. See detail below.

In pure mathematics, where variables do not necessarily carry a physical meaning, the determination is a matter of definition. A variable is defined to be dependent on another variable, for instance, y depends on x via the specific function, y = 10x + 10. The key is: this is given. Otherwise (if it were not given), suppose I gave you an equation a+b=10 and not told you which is the dependent and which the independent variable. You could think of each being either: a=10-b and b=10-a. Without this being defined, there is no clear way to determine dependency.

In science, on the other hand, the determination is made based on experimental design and based on certain plausible assumptions about natural dependencies. For example, if you design an experiment to measure some physical quantity, such a height of an individual, you can look at the that as a variable dependent on other variables, such as age, ie., what is the average height of a person given their particular age (say, 0, 1, 2,..., 18 years of age). It would be more of a stretch to measure the age as dependent variable of height.

I hope these thoughts are helpful.

2.In ABC, BD is perpendicular to AC. The dimensions are shown in centimeters.
Vitek1552 [10]

Answer:

AC = 12

Step-by-step explanation:

From the question, we have that BD is perpendicular to AC

This means that it is at 90 degrees to the base

so we have two similar right triangles

Let us use Pythagoras’ theorem to get the measure of one of the legs (AD and DC)

Let us call the leg x

We have the Pythagoras’ theorem stating that the square of the hypotenuse (the side facing the right angle; 10 here) is equal to the sum of the squares of the two other sides

10^2 = x^2 + 8^2

100 = x^2 + 64

x^2 = 100-64

x^2 = 36

x = √36

x = 6

AD = DC = 6

AC = 2 * AD

AC = 2 * 6

AC = 12

What is the answer to 7.5+(4.8+9.9)=
kkurt [141]
First you do the 4.8 + 9.9.
This equals 14.7
then you add 14.7 to the 7.5.
You get 22.2.

Each contestant in the Hunger Games must be trained to compete. Suppose that the time it takes to train a contestant has mean 5
goldfiish [28.3K]

Answer:

P(X>250) = 0.7357

Step-by-step explanation:

From the question we can gather the data:

μ = 5 days

σ = 4 days

n = 100

It will take more than 250 days to train the 100 contestants so,

time to train one person = 250/100 = 2.5 days.

x = 2.5 days

We will use the normal distribution formula to find the z-score and then use this z-value to find the probability from the normal distribution table.

Z = (x - μ)/(σ)

Using the values mentioned above,

Z = (2.5-5)/(4)

  = -0.625

Z = -0.63

So, using the normal distribution probability table we get the following probability at z = -0.63:

P = 0.2643

This is the probability that it will take less than 250 days to train all the contestants but we need the probability that it will take more than 250 days. So, using the total probability theorem:

P(X>250) = 1 - P(X<250)

               = 1 - 0.2643

P(X>250) = 0.7357
