I think the answer is land.
Yes but it would require a lot of work, money, and the economy would suffer at first. The first route is to slowly diverge and start importing from other countries. The other countries will use the money to start to produce things we request. This will happen over a long amount of time as other countries go through a sort of revolution and gain new ties with the U.S. The economy will suffer for years and things will become more expensive but in the long run our economy will stabilize and receive things it couldn’t have had before due to industrialization in baren countries and China continues to suffer as they cannot rely on the U.S. for major export.
Sun Yat Sen used nationalism to help unite the 5 unique peoples of China. He had a flag made that used colors from each of their flags. He insisted they could not be a democratic nation as long as there was racial differences and must work united.M. Ataturk was a commander in Turkey. After the defeat in WWI he returned to Turkey determined to make it a democratic state. He made sure all people including women were provided a free and mandatory education. He made sure that the women were given equal rights and civil rights. He did much to lower the taxes on the poor. Ghandi led India towards nationalism by using non-violent civil disobedience. He worked for equality for women, easing the poverty levels, and making harmony between the different religious groups.
Hope these ideas are helpful.
