The bacteria forms new kind of cells to adapt to a new environment. This adaptation is under tight genetic control, involving the expression of multiple genes.

the bacteria need to adjust their enzyme levels in order to quickly benefit from the nutrient mix that is currently available in the surrounding.

If the living environment undergoes a sudden change, the bacterium's own production of proteins has to fulfill these changes in an effective way.
