It’s important because as the Secretary of State he or she is supposed to carry out foreign policy and being apart of the national security council helps keep America safe from both in the country and foreign countries

Council's function has been to advise and assist the President on national security and foreign policies. The Council also serves as the President's principal arm for coordinating these policies among various government agencies.
