In the short story 'Condensed Milk', the protagonist responded to the conflict very cautiously and thoughtfully. Since he had already mentioned that hunger had left them without strength for feelings, he did what was best for him by lying to Shestakov that he would go along with him if he bring him food.
The protagonist also knew that it was a trap to prolong their sentences after getting caught. The lines "He was going to get us to make a run for it and then hand us in: that much was completely obvious" indicates that the protagonist was aware of Shestakov's intentions.
