I'd say that John Bunyan modeled his writing style in 'The Pilgrim's Progress' off of the English Bible. The theme, the style, everything is very similar to the Bible, which was ultimately his intention.

John Bunyan was an English writer born in the 17th century. A Puritan, his book the Pilgrim´s Progress sought to relate a good man´s reformed religious vision about life. The book that was written in two parts largely while in prison for conducting religious activities outside the area of jurisdiction of the Church of England during the reign of Charles II. The  book is considered one of the most famous Christian Allegory ever written and it´s popularity was considered second to only the bible.
