Caroline Le Count
(1846–1923)
Caroline Le Count was a teacher and an activist for African American rights. Her story shows that people were fighting discrimination in both the North and the South
Step Two:
Now that you have decided on your nominee, it is time to get creative! You will create your own design for a postage stamp to honor your chosen African American Civil War hero. Your design should include:
The name of your nominee.
At least three images related to your nominee (For example, if you were creating a stamp for Abraham Lincoln, you might include a picture of broken chains because Lincoln helped end slavery.)
A catch phrase or quote that relates to your nominee (For example, a stamp for Abraham Lincoln might include the nickname "Honest Abe," or the phrase "four score and seven years ago" from his Gettysburg Address.)
Step Three:
Write a letter to the selection committee justifying your nomination. Your letter should include the following:
The name of the individual you think should be featured on the postage stamp.
At least two paragraphs explaining why you nominated the individual.
Your first paragraph should include at least two specific examples of heroic actions during the Civil War time period.
Your second paragraph should describe how the images and wording on your stamp represent your nominee.
The purpose of these both steps is that it gives the candidates a realistic, sensible, and practical preview of the vacant job. In both steps, candidates of the hiring process should know the job expectation versus reality so they will not be surprised if their expectation doesn't meet.
