The prokaryotic cells are the living cells which are thought to have evolved in the primordial conditions on the earth. The common prokaryotyes belong to the group Monera which includes the bacteria and Archaebacteria.
The bacteria contain their genetic material or DNA freely in the cytoplasm not enclosed in the nucleus. The DNA is arranged in the form of a circular chromosome. The bacteria also contain extra DNA which contains genes for the stress conditions and is known as the plasmid.
Prokaryotic cells are usually smaller and simpler than eukaryotic cells. They do not have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles. In prokaryotic cells, the DNA, or genetic material, forms a single large circle that coils up on itself.
