We have already talked about another class of chemicals that helps send signals in the body—neurotransmitters. How are neurotr
Darina [25.2K]

Answer:

Similarities: both are chemical messengers, both can have (but don't necessarily have) similar structures (made from amino acids), both can be produced by the central nervous system (hypothalamus produces some hormones), certain molecules can act as both hormones and neurotransmitters (example: norepinephrine).

Differences: neurotransmitters are released by neurons across a synaptic gap, have very short distances to travel, and act very quickly on the neighboring cell. Hormones are released by glands and often have to travel longer distances, which means that they are slower-acting. Also, hormones are typically used for regulation (negative feedback) while neurotransmitters are used for stimulation of a neighboring cell.

Why do pedigrees valuable to genetic counselors in discussing inheritance patterns with patients?
irakobra [83]
A pedigree is a symbolic diagram that is used to show the presence and presentation of specific alleles in the families of both parents. This is used mostly for genetically controlled diseases and conditions. If a couple is in genetic counseling a pedigree is valuable in helping to determine the risk of that couple having a child that will either present with the condition or be a carrier for the condition. A pedigree is also composed in a way, with shapes and colors, that is an easy to understand visual representation of the inheritance patterns.

8. In chickens, brown feathers are dominant over red feathers. Suppose we cross two heterozygous chickens.
devlian [24]

Answer:

Crossing two chickens heterozygous for the trait feather color, when brown feathers are dominant over red feathers, will produce offspring with brown and red feathers in a brown:red phenotypic ratio of 3:1.

Explanation:

Knowing that in chickens brown feathers are the expression of the dominant allele (B) and the recessive allele is red (b), crossing two heterozygous individuals (Bb) will result in offspring that are likely to have brown or red feathers.

The cross can be represented by a Punnett Square:

Bb X Bb cross

alleles B b

B BB Bb

b Bb bb

Where the result is:

Genotypes:

  • Bb, 50%
  • BB, 25%
  • bb, 25%

Phenotypes:

  • Brown feathers, 75%
  • Red feathers, 25%.

In this case, the probability of having brown or red feathers is 3:1.

the enzymes in your body help to perform very important tasks. These include building muscle, destroying toxins, and breaking down food particles during digestion. An enzyme's shape is tied to its function. Heat, disease, or harsh chemical conditions can damage enzymes and change their shape
