When crude oil is spilled in the ocean, how is the ecosystem affected

Oil destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, and the water repellency of a bird's feathers, thus exposing these creatures to the harsh elements. Without the ability to repel water and insulate from the cold water, birds and mammals will die from hypothermia.

Many birds and animals also ingest oil when they try to clean themselves, which can poison them.

Fish and shellfish may not be exposed immediately, but can come into contact with oil if it is mixed into the water column. When exposed to oil, adult fish may experience reduced growth, enlarged livers, changes in heart and respiration rates, fin erosion, and reproduction impairment. Oil also adversely affects eggs and larval survival.

When oil is spilled in the ocean, it initially spreads in the water (primarily on the surface), depending on its relative density and composition. The oil slick formed may remain cohesive, or may break up in the case of rough seas. Waves, water currents, and wind force the oil slick to drift over large areas, impacting the open ocean, coastal areas, and marine and terrestrial habitats in the path of the drift.

Oil that contains volatile organic compounds partially evaporates, losing between 20 and 40 percent of its mass and becoming denser and more viscous (i.e., more resistant to flow). A small percentage of oil may dissolve in the water. The oil residue also can disperse almost invisibly in the water or form a thick mousse with the water. Part of the oil waste may sink with suspended particulate matter, and the remainder eventually congeals into sticky tar balls. Over time, oil waste weathers (deteriorates) and disintegrates by means of photolysis (decomposition by sunlight) and bio degradation (decomposition due to microorganisms). The rate of bio degradation depends on the availability of nutrients, oxygen, and microorganisms, as well as temperature.

How has the artificial manipulation of plasmids been used for technological applications??
sveta [45]
Thank you for posting your question here at brainly. Plasmids can be used to incorporate a desired gene into something else which is lacking the gene. An example would be that you could take a plasmid from a bacteria which is resistant to an antibiotic and put it into a bacteria which is not resistant to the antibiotic. Therefore, the insertion of the plasmid would make the susceptible bacteria resistant.

You are trying to determine if an object is living or nonliving.
Afina-wow [57]

Answer: a,b,c,d

Explanation:

all four of them are characteristics in all living organisms. All living things will grow and change, it will move otherwise it wouldn’t be able to get the nutrients it may need (or run away from predators), in order for the species to go on, they must reproduce, and they must maintain homeostasis so that they don’t freeze of burn to death. but however, it is not required for the living organism to be made up of only one cell, take humans for example.
