  • ΔABE is similar to ΔACD
  • Therefore, the ratios of corresponding sides will be equal.
  • That is; AC/AB = AD/AE = CD/BE

In this case;

AC = 48

AB = 36

AE = 24

AD = 24 + 6x - 4

     = 20 + 6x

Therefore;

\frac{48}{36}=\frac{20+6x}{24}

Thus;

(48 × 24) = 36(20 + 6x)

1152 = 720 + 216x

216x = 1152 - 720

216x = 432

     x = 432 ÷ 216

       = 2

Therefore, the value of x is 2
