The United States emerged as the most powerful country in the world after World War Two. Unlike the ravaged and ruined economies of Europe and Asia, the US economy was prosperous and dynamic, its industry was strong and efficient during the war. It enjoyed ther largest share of the world GDP.

The Cold War era started following the conflict of interests and contradictions between the Western Aliies and the Soviet Union. Two rival camps emerged led by a superpower each. The US became to be known as "the leader of the free world" because it represented a social, political and economic system based on democracy and free markets, as opposed to the communist system and ideology of the Soviet Union with a one-party rule and a central state-controlled command economy.
