The best paraphrase of the first paragraph is...

  • After school, Jade tells her cousin Karla to try out for the step team.

In the first paragraph Jade is trying to convice Karla to join the step team. It goes on to talk about how Karla is nervous about trying out because she doesn't want to mess up in front of others. While Jade cares about Karla, it isn't the most important part of the paragraph.

A To describe Chicago's tenacity B To foreshadow later events in the poem C To suggest Chicago's harshness D To establish a tone
Orlov [11]

Answer: A. To describe Chicago's tenacity

Explanation:

This is based on the poem "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg. In it, he talks about some of the things that are wrong with Chicago as well as how tough it can be to live in the city.

He however also praises the city and talks about how it still stands strong through all these challenges and likens this tenacity to the bravado and laughter of an ignorant fighter who has never tasted defeat and so goes into battle with little fear.

What striking example of imagery does Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem, “Sympathy” employ?
Dennis_Churaev [7]
The caged bird, is a striking imagery used by Paul Laurence Dunbar in his poem. The caged bird is an imagery used to tell a story about someone who is not free, someone who's been kept from doing what he or she really wants. The caged bird beating his wings shows someone's struggle to get out of the cage and be free.
