“I broke the locket with a thick brick.” What rhetorical device is being used in this sentence?

Answer:

B. Consonance

Explanation:

A is not right because alliteration is when the same first letter of words is used repeatedly. For example the slick snake slithered silently... often this is used for tongue twisters.

C is definitely not right because an Onomatopoeia is when you are using a word associated with a sound, like <em>bang</em> or <em>squeak</em> to name a few examples. There are no sounds in this sentence, therefore no onomatopoeias.

D is not right. Assonance is when the vowels of a series of words sound repetitive or similar. So in this case you have "with", "thick" and "brick" where the "i" in the words have a repetitive sound, however there are only three cases of this whereas there are 4 instances of B.

The answer is B because consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds, and you have 4 repetitive "k" sounds in this sentence. "bro<u>k</u>e" "lo<u>ck</u>et" "thi<u>ck</u>" and "bri<u>ck</u>". While you may be able to argue that D could work, there are more examples of B in this sentence.
