In social science, agency refers to how one is able to independently make their own decision and choices without being influenced by any institution. It works against structure under which certain institution may have influence and restrictions on one's own agent and their decision making.
Michelle is protesting against structure which my impose certain values on her peers , restricting them on how they make choices and decisions.
