With mercantilism the colonies were only allowed to trade with their mother country so they could not trade their resources with other countries which meant they could only rely on their raw materials for wealth. Raw materials went from the colonies to the mother countries to be made into products. Raw materials themselves aren't worth much so when the colonists were taxed they couldn't afford paying all that money. So they were mad at their mother countries.
