The higher pH in the cytosol does not allow the hydrolytic enzymes to function should they escape from the lysosome.

Explanation;

-Lysosomes are membrane-enclosed compartments filled with hydrolytic enzymes that are used for the controlled intracellular digestion of macromolecules.

-The lysosomes contain many hydrolytic enzymes such as proteases, nucleases, and lipases.  Lysosomal enzymes are synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), are transported to the Golgi apparatus, and are tagged for lysosomes by the addition of mannose-6-phosphate label.
