Nicotinic acid, or niacin, is known for its normolipidemic properties since the 1950s. Despite significant side effects, mainly flushing, it has since been used, mainly in the United States, as a treatment for mixed hyperlipidemias, thanks to its hypotriglyceridemic effect for the increase of HDL-cholesterol.
