Situation in Germany affected Louie a lot.

Explanation:

"Unbroken" by "Laura Hillenbrand" is story about “Louie” who is the fastest runner in high school. He received an invitation to take part in  Olympics in Berlin, but Olympics got cancelled because of World War II. He then enlisted himself in Air Force. Louis becomes a bombardier. On one of his missions, Louis and his friend Phil were captured by Japanese military ship. After being tortured for a long time from the Japanese, he got free but then suffered PTSD.  

So, situation in Germany did affect his life as he struggled to lead a good life and receive good education.
