Hey there!

When we are to consider this, we would want to . . .

1.) Make sure the sentence is starting from the past.

2.) Make sure that what ever is being stated from the past is being (accomplished).

3.) And from the end, make sure that it would have progress.

And example would be the following:

"Had been painting."

This would be a perfect example of this.
