The quadratic formula is:
x =  \frac{ - b +  -  \sqrt{ {b}^{2}  - 4ac} }{2a}
so...
x =   \frac{ - ( - 1) +  -  \sqrt{( - 1)^{2} - 4(4)( - 7) } }{2(4)}
so simplified from calculator work

x =  \frac{1 +  \sqrt{113} }{8}  \: and \:  \frac{1 -  \sqrt{113} }{8}
