Caravel vessels were light in weight and could sail in wind. Famous explorers Vasco da Gama and Bartolome Diaz relied upon their voyage to unknown along with Christopher Columbus, who discovered America (Nina and Pinta Ships).

Caravels were lightweight ships used in the XV and XVI century, mainly by explorers from Portugal and Spain.

Due to its light weight and large size, the caravel assured a faster sailing time as well as lots of space to transport goods and food for the sailors, thus, making it easier for longer voyages.

Perphaps the most famous caravels were the ones sailed by Columbus in which he discovered America.
