Rewrite B:  |x-3| - 1 = 5 becomes |x-3| = 6.  One way to interpret this follows:

Regard 3 as the center of a graph.  Then locate 2 points:  one that is 6 units to the right of 3, and the other that is 6 units to the left of 3.  The final graph consists of just two points:  -3 and 9.  Note that -3 + 6 = 3 (the center) and that 9-6 = 3 (also the center).
