The first law in the United States that was made to regulate medicine was the   "1906 Food and Drugs Act." However, before this law there was Drug Importation Act that kept out tainted medicines by the Customs dept.

The original name for this department was " Food, Drug, and Insecticide Administration" and was finally changed in 1930. The entire act was rewritten in 1933. In 1938, another division started that regulated more medicines and this included factories. The name of this department is the " The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FDC) Act of 1938."
