Answer:

At age 13,  Gandhi was married to Kasturbai in a child marriage, meaning she's a teenager, too, and their parents are the ones who decide they should get married.

since it was early marriage the author put light to the scene when he wrote:

<em>Two innocent children all unwittingly hurled themselves into the ocean of life.</em>

Gandhi was coached on his behavior to his wife on wedding night. But being a kid himself, he comes off shy. They were too shy to initiate a conversation but by the passage of time, they get to know each other.
